We were prepared for the rains, our day would start after the sun rays kissed the earth. The probable routes were either Tale path or Tarin tibe Khoke Pass path.Though our look out was for none other than Kaiser I hind & Bhutan Glory.
In the morning very next to stream we could spot the elusive Neptis philyra, also known as long-streak sailor, at pange camp basking in sunlight next to the stream.
This was the first recorded sighting in April 2024 of the species in India, originating from Pange.
The butterfly was first described by M Ménétriés in 1859 from Russia. This species has been found in East Asia, including eastern Siberia, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China, Tibet, Yunnan and Vietnam.
During one of the days we could spot Brown Gorgon fluttering and finally resting next to stream. It was difficult to identify it.
HIMALAYAN BROWN GORGON ( SUMMITERS ADVENTURES )
Males have a tendency to puddle on the water's edge. They are difficult to spot as they have a tendency to camouflage. It can become quite oblivious to human presence. Their cryptic undersides protect them from view as they tend to look like a dead leaf on the water's edge. Older specimens are canopy dwellers and do not visit seepages to puddle but can be sporadically observed to make quick downward swoops on exposed seepages perhaps for a quick drink.
During the field trip of 4 days, walking more than 45 kms inside the Tale Wildlife Santuary. We could spot 55 species of Butterflies, 05 species of Snakes,05 Moths and few birds.
Being in the remote location, at Tale, we were forced to reach back to Hapoli in Ziro to witness the Dree festival happening in ZIRO.
At the festival we were welcomed with a puje - a stoll over neck, by our host wishing us
Happy Dree Ayapa Ato...........!

The Apatanis who inhabit a tranquil pine clad valley called Ziro in the navel of Lower Subansiri District of Arunachal Pradesh, are famous for their unique practice of wet rice cultivation. They are also known for their sustainable agricultural practices and the agricultural cycles that govern their everyday lives.
The agricultural festival of Dree is the highlight in this cycle
A day before to culmination of DREE festival, Shaman, or Nyibus - The Apatani ritual specialist of the Apatani tribe performs rituals aimed at ensuring a bountiful harvest and warding off pests and diseases.
These rituals involve appeasing deities like Tamu (to protect against pests), Metii (for crop diseases), Mepii (for soil fertility), Danyi (for life-giving force), and Pyoku (to prevent famine). The festival includes offerings, prayers, and traditional dances.
Symbolic Destruction:
I was very surprised to know that the Apatani locals practise sun-moon worship called as Donyi-Polo and there was also a small temple near the entrance of Hong village.
Deity Propitiation:
Prayers and Incantations:
Traditional chants and prayers are recited to invoke blessings for a healthy crop and prosperity.
During the ceremony the apatani women clad in colourful attire began to perform the Daminda dance, a traditional folk dance of Arunachal Pradesh. It marks the beginning of the rice sowing season. It is a prayer for a good harvest and protection from natural calamities. The dance is also a warm welcome to guests and a way to seek blessings from nature's deities
We felt how true are these rituals and festivites which enriches the cultural diversity of Northeast India, adding to the region’s vibrant tapestry of indigenous customs and practices. Finally felt how fortunate are we to be a part of it !
