Charming Doors of Chettinad - A Photo Essay
Trading with Burma and other southeastern countries, the chettiar community had amassed wealth and leading a luxurious life. Their lifestyle was reflected in their possession and houses they built. Post world war affected their business and slowed down the progress. Aftermath resulting in the loss of their land and wealth due to post-war government policies aimed at nationalizing land and restricting their business practices; many Chettiars were forced to return to India, often with significant financial losses. Few houses are in sheer neglect today and few retain the old charm. The crumbling structures tell tales of love of chettiars for their family even today !

All this talk of doors reminded me of a trip I had taken to Varanasi and Pobjika in Bhutan.
I would be writing my opinions and captions for the following pictures of recent tour. I would like for you to just soak in this beauty of chettinad mansions , the way I did while wandering the streets of Kanadukathan - the land of frescoes, doors and windows, arches and domes, exquisite cuisine , enterprising , hospitable warmth and exquisite people !
