About Kedarakantha - Kedarakantha means Throat of Lord Shiva. There is a belief that Lord Shiva meditated at Kedarkantha who is so concentrated and focused. However, lord Shiva disturbed from the noise of people from the distant tiny villages located in the valley. Lord Shiva  decided to leave this place and went to Kedarnath. However, lord Shiva left tiny part of his Kanth (throat) in the mountain. Hence named Kedar Kantha. There is a small temple at the top dedicated to god Shiva and goddess Parvati, with a small shrine for Lord Ganesh. Also there is a lake nearby named Juda-ka-talab and its name implies from the droplet that fallen from Shiva's hair which formed this lake.

Views from the top of Kedarakantha - The most beautiful mountain range of Himalayas is visible including Swargarohini Peak (6300 meters), Black Peak (6387 meters), Banddarpunch Peak (6300 meters) and other mountains are seen from here are Rupin range, Supin range, Khimloga Peak, Baraadsar Lake range, Vishkhopri range and Ranglana Peak.

Trek Itinerary

Day 1 - Dehradun to Sankri (2000 Meters) Drive

This is a pleasant 8-9 hours drive via Mussorie, Yamuna river valley and later part passes through beautiful valleys. This is an enchanting hill drive over approx 210 Km ride to Sankri, a village in the lap of Himalayan region, which is the starting point of the trek.

Day 2 - Sankri (2000 Meters) to Juda Ka Talab Camp (Trek / 3 to 4 hours)

Overall 4 hours trek from Sankri leads to lake/pond named Juda-ka-Talab. This lake will be fully frozen during December / January time. On the way you can see locals, women and children, carrying wood and dried leaves for their cattle. Walking trails will be combination of steep and levelled grounds.

Day 3 - Juda Ka Talab to Base Camp (2800 Meters) (Trek / 4 Hrs)

The 4 hours trek passes through the route which is beautiful with vast fields of snow and patches of green in between them. The Kedar Kantha base campsite is an open snow ground surrounded by trees offering an amaing view of Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch & Kalanag peaks. This camping site has excellent picturesque views.

Day 4 - Base Camp (2800 Meters) – Kedar Kantha Summit (3800 Meters) – Base Camp (2800 Meters) – Hargaon Camp site (Trek / 8 Hrs)

It's a long day. The distance to the summit from the base camp is not long but is reasonably steep and walking on snow makes it more tiring. It takes around 2-3 hours to reach the top from the base camp.

Trek to witness sunrise - Start early about 2 AM in the morning. Ensure you have the headlamp. At summit, you get to see all the mountains of the Yamunotri and Gangotri range and other ranges in Himachal. The temparature clocks around -10 C to -14 C at summit with chilling cold and wind. So ensure to equip yourslef to beat cold and wind..!

After spending some time on the top head back to basecamp and then head towards Hargaon camp.

Descend from the summit

Day 5 - Hargaon Camp to - Sankri (2000 Meters) ( Trek / 2-3 Hrs)

This path offers the glimpse of the tips of the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas. This is the downhill path to reach Sankri.

Day 6 - Sankri (2000 Meters) – Dehradun (Drive / 6 - 7 Hrs)

Temparature

  • Summer: ~Day (5°C to 15°C) Night (2° C to 5° C)
  • Winter: ~Day (-2°C to -5° C) Night (-5°C to -10°C)
  • Temparature at Summit (During Winter): ~ -10°C to -14°C

      BSNL Network is available in Sankri but its freaky with poor connectivity. Mori is 22 KM rfom Sankri where most of the networks available includig Jio. People says at top of Kedarakantha, Airtel and Jio are available, but its proven wrong in most of the case.
